Shrink Wrapping: The Different Types of Shrink Film

Shrink film, commonly known as shrink wrap, is a specific type of plastic that contracts or "shrinks" around an item when exposed to heat, forming a secure seal. Tools required for shrink wrapping include a heat sealer to close the open ends of the film and a heat source to shrink the film around the product. Common heat sealers include I-bar, L-bar, and impulse sealers. Heat sources typically involve manual heat guns and automatic heat tunnels. Alternatively, you can use a shrink wrap machine that handles cutting, sealing, and shrinking. Shrink films come in various sizes, and at The Packaging Company, we offer options from 6" to 36" in width and in thicknesses such as 50, 60, 75, and 100 gauge. Discover the different types and uses of shrink wraps below.

Types of Shrink Film

Shrink films can be categorized into various types, including PVC, POF, and PE. Here are the benefits of each type:

PVC Shrink Film

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) shrink wrap was once the most globally used shrink film due to its cost-effectiveness and versatility. Nowadays, PVC shrink wrap is commonly used for DVD/CD cases, gaming discs, software boxes, retail packaging, and other non-food items. Despite its high tear resistance, PVC shrink wrap tends to become brittle after shrinking, making it unsuitable for multi-product packaging and extreme temperature environments.

Polyolefin (POF) Shrink Film

Recently, Polyolefin (POF) shrink wrap has surpassed PVC in popularity due to its superior quality and versatility. Being FDA-approved, it is safe for food items. This type of shrink wrap is widely used for packaging printed goods, baked items, frozen foods like pizza, small toys, and candies. Known for its high clarity, puncture resistance, and temperature endurance, POF shrink wrap is also environmentally friendly, made from 100% recycled materials, and suitable for bundling multiple items.

Polyethylene (PE) Shrink Film

Polyethylene or PE shrink wrap is a more robust and durable type of film typically used for industrial purposes. While PVC and POF shrink films max out at about 100 gauge thickness, PE can reach up to 1200 gauge. PE shrink wrap is primarily used for wrapping beverage multipacks, boats, and pallets for storage.

Styles of Shrink Film

As mentioned, shrink wrap comes in various materials, each offering unique benefits. Additionally, it is available in different styles:

Tube-Style Shrink Film

Shrink tubing is a specialized design featuring two pre-sealed sides, allowing users to insert products easily and create custom-length shrink bags. This high-gloss, crystal-clear film is ideal for showcasing products and can be used with both portable and automatic equipment.

Rolls of Shrink Film

Centerfold shrink wrap rolls are formed by folding the shrink wrap in half lengthways before placing it on the roll. Commonly used in retail packaging, they enable retailers to insert the product into the pocket and use an L-bar sealer to seal it completely. These rolls are suitable for larger products and can be used with both manual and automatic equipment.

The Difference Between Shrink Wrap and Stretch Wrap

Although shrink wrap and stretch wrap look similar and can be made of similar materials, their usage varies significantly. Shrink wrap is used to create a tamper-evident seal around single or multiple products by shrinking the plastic with heat. It stretches only 50-75% and does not cling to itself.

On the other hand, stretch wrap is more commonly used to secure larger items and boxes together, preventing them from shifting. It stretches from 100-300% and clings to itself without the need for heat.
