&#;For the North American market, nearly 85-90 percent of LVT (rigid and flex) comes from Asia,&#; said David Sheehan, vice president of residential resilient, Mannington. He explained this statistic includes vinyl flooring produced in China, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Turkey and India.
Jamann Stepp, vice president hard surfaces for The Dixie Group, noted that while rigid core is still primarily made in China, countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia have entered the equation in the last several years. &#;Primarily what we are seeing is China-based companies opening shop in these countries to get around the 25 percent tariff that has now been in place for some time,&#; he said, noting India too is a country that has made inroads into producing rigid core.
&#;It appears that Vietnam has been a huge benefactor of the tariffs, as Chinese companies are attempting to quickly establish manufacturing footprints there possibly because they can avoid tariffs this way. Vietnamese companies are building plants as well, and lower labor rates may make Vietnam a very attractive option to them,&#; shared David Thoresen, senior vice president, product and innovation at Armstrong Flooring. Thoresen added the United States is also benefitting from shifts in production, with at least six new plants coming online in the states within the last two years.
Explained Adam Ward, vice president of product management, resilient for Mohawk, there is still a good amount of production in China, but because of U.S. tariffs there has been a move recently to places like Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia. Production is also moving to the U.S. , which he said has become a more desirable production location due to the issues surrounding the supply chain.
