Top 12 Ingredients We Avoid in Our Skincare

1. ALUMINUM

Toxic metal that can have oestrogen-like effects in our systems, disrupting the healthy functioning of the endocrine system.

2. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine)

Clear, colorless, viscous liquids with ammonia-like odors.

Usually found in products that foam like facial cleansers and soaps. They are also found in eye makeup, fragrances, hair products, and sunscreens.

3. DMDM HYDANTOIN & UREA (Imidazolidinyl)

Preservatives that often release formaldehyde which may cause joint pain, skin allergies, headaches, and loss of sleep.

Usually found in skincare products, cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners, and detergents.

4. MINERAL OIL

A petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging its pores. This is incredibly harmful because it interferes with skin&#;s ability to eliminate toxins, therefore increasing likelihood of acne and other disorders.

Usually found in creams, lotions, ointments, and cosmetics.

5. PARABENS (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl)

Not always labeled, used as preservatives, and may contribute to hormone imbalance.

Usually found almost everywhere including skincare products such as moisturizers and deodorants.

6. PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

Ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin&#;s natural moisture factor. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products.

Usually found in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease.

7. PHTHALATES

Chemicals used to increase flexibility and strength of plastics, and not often listed among the ingredients on products.

Usually found in cosmetics such as fragrance oils and listed under the term &#;fragrance".

Usually used to make extracts from herbs.

9. SILOXANES

Look for ingredients ending in "-siloxane" or "-methicone." Used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth, and moisten. Suspected endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant (cyclotetrasiloxane). Harmful to fish and other wildlife.

10. SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES)

Detergent that makes products foam, lather, and bubble.

Usually found in 90% of personal-care products that foam!

11. SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES

Anything that is synthetic or artificial should always raise a red flag. These are made up of hundreds to thousands of different ingredients not listed on the label, so you are never sure what you are actually being exposed to.

Usually found in cosmetic and skincare products but also many household products such as candles, air fresheners, and scented trash bags.

12. TRICLOSAN

A synthetic antibacterial agent that may disrupt thyroid function and can degrade into a form of dioxin, a class of chemicals linked to a broad range of toxicities including cancer.

Usually found in soaps, mouthwash, shaving cream, deodorants, toothpastes, etc.

3 Face Mask Ingredients to Avoid

I used to have a huge collection of face masks that were either impulse buys or gifts from friends. One day, I decided to go through my stash and sort through which ones were actually safe for my skin and worth keeping. I was shocked to discover how many were full of harmful ingredients! Now I'm careful about reading labels when I see a cute mask with clever packaging that's drawing me in. If someone gives me a face mask as a gift that I don't feel good about, I simply discard it. It's not worth transmitting harmful ingredients by passing it on.

Ingredients to Avoid

1. Steroids

Did you know some sheet masks use steroids? According to Byrdie, a report highlighted that many inexpensive face mask companies were incorporating glucocorticoid, a steroid that provides immediate results, but at a significant cost. While you may notice instant relief from inflammation, your skin risks dependence on the steroid. Discontinuing these masks could lead to even worse outcomes than you experienced before.

"The brands are not named due to the ongoing investigation by authorities, but according to the Chinese FDA, one in four sheet masks contain banned steroids (glucocorticoid). The most frightening part of all this is that it only takes two weeks for users to develop a dependency." &#;Pheobe Song, Snow Fox skincare founder

Always inspect your face masks for any signs of steroid use, whether labeled glucocorticoid or other types like corticoid and cortisol.

2. Alcohol + Fragrances

It's no secret that fragrances are prevalent in numerous skincare products, and they could be the reason you're not seeing the results you desire despite following a disciplined skincare routine. Whether battling oily skin with breakouts or struggling with dryness, alcohol and fragrances (considered sensitizing ingredients) can exacerbate both conditions.

"Oily, breakout-prone skin is especially susceptible to the effects of sensitizing ingredients. When problem ingredients aggravate skin&#;s surface, a chain reaction can occur that makes oily skin worse, potentially triggering more breakouts. Many sensitizing ingredients quickly dehydrate skin&#;s surface, leading to a feeling of tight, drawn skin. Continued use of these ingredients can rob skin&#;s surface of vital replenishing components needed to stay smooth, supple, and hydrated. Switching to non-irritating products can make a visible difference, often overnight!" &#;Paula's Choice

While face masks with fragrances can feel luxurious and spa-like, the irritation they may cause is not worth the risk.

3. Parabens

Though discussions around parabens often revolve around haircare, they are also found in many skincare products. These preservatives prolong product shelf life but can mimic oestrogen, which has been linked to breast cancer in women.

"In a British study, traces of five parabens were discovered in the breast tissue of 19 out of 20 women studied. This study did not prove a direct causal relationship between parabens and cancer, but it did identify that parabens can penetrate the skin and remain in tissue." &#;Zoe Dubs, Elle

Moreover, disposing of parabens—whether rinsing them off in the shower or discarding products—can pose environmental risks to marine life. Thus, to steer clear of face masks with parabens, look for ingredients like butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.
