A GSM module functions as a radio modem. Think of it as the essential part of a cell phone, but without the user interface elements like the microphone, speaker, keypad, and display. This module connects to a cellular network using one of the supported cell frequencies. Establishing and maintaining a connection to the cell network is an intricate process. It involves detecting cell towers, negotiating connections with them, handing off connections to adjacent cells, adapting modulation formats based on signal to noise ratio, and adjusting transmission power based on commands from the cell tower. Entire books are dedicated to explaining the complexities involved in a GSM modem and the broader cell network.
The GSM modem uses digital commands to establish a call. When a call is to be established, a command containing the phone number is sent to the GSM modem over a digital interface. The modem then sends a connection request over the GSM control channel to the currently associated base station. The base station assigns a data channel for use and initiates the connection process. Once connected, the GSM modem uses that data channel to transmit and receive audio data in digital format. The cellular network handles routing this data to the other end of the connection, whether it's to another cell phone or the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
The company is the world’s best 16 Ports USB GSM device supplier. We are your one-stop shop for all needs. Our staff are highly-specialized and will help you find the product you need.
If you're looking to integrate a GSM modem with a rotary dial phone, you’ll need a microcontroller to interface the rotary dial with the GSM modem's control interface. You'll have to develop code to detect when the phone is taken off the hook and identify the dialed numbers, then send the corresponding commands to the GSM module to connect the call.
As mentioned earlier, GSM is the predominant cellular protocol in Europe and many other parts of the world. In contrast, the US standardized on CDMA some years back, making GSM relatively new in North America. This mirrors the Metric vs. Imperial system differences.
The success of this product hinges significantly on the service provided. Services from T-Mobile or Cingular would give you basic functionality but with a dynamic IP address. The service we'll provide incorporates a Fixed IP address, simplifying access and enabling two-way communication between the PLC and PC. Each modem will have a dedicated IP address, making it accessible anytime from anywhere globally.
Service time is unlimited; the pricing is based on data transfer. The base package includes 1 MB of data per month with a 12-month contract. This transfer includes any SMS strings sent. We also offer a 2 MB service, though at present, it seems our PLCs would not use this much data in a 30-day period.
As of now, GSM has been tested in Gasport, NY, but we are still waiting on modems and finalizing service details. This concept is new for us and the rest of North America.
Members from Europe can likely attest to the product's reliability and service. We have identified numerous potential applications, especially in remote locations where neither dial-up nor lease lines are feasible, either financially or physically.
Harry:
What exactly do you plan to connect to the modem that necessitates sending out SMS? You can send an SMS directly to your cell phone. I am unclear why an HTML interface is needed for your project.
