Did you ever wonder how your coffee table got its name?
It began in 1652 when the first coffee house opened in London. It was so popular that more coffee houses soon opened all over Europe. Also called Penny University, the cost to enter was a penny and included a cup of coffee.
The idea of a coffee table came from the need to put down your hot beverage between sips. These tables, called tea tables, were tall at 27″ high, compared to today’s coffee tables at 18″-19″ high.
There are no documents from the 17th and 18th century mentioning coffee tables although there are hundreds of references about coffee houses during the time period. It is speculated that the name tea table was changed to coffee table because coffee became more popular than tea.
It wasn’t until 1938, that a coffee table was defined as a “low wide table used before a sofa or couch.”
Today, coffee tables (also called cocktail tables) still share the same location in the living room in front of the sofa. Yet, the shape, size, and functionality have changed vastly.
Over time, coffee tables have evolved in terms of design, materials, and functionality. Originally made from wood, modern coffee tables can be found in an array of materials like glass, metal, and even stone. The designs have also transformed to fit modern aesthetics and needs, with many tables offering storage solutions, adjustable heights, and even integrated technology like charging ports.
The versatility of coffee tables has also expanded. They are not just for holding cups of coffee anymore. They serve as centerpiece decor items, play surfaces for children, and spaces to display books and magazines. Their multifunctionality makes them an essential piece in contemporary homes, reflecting both style and practicality.
When choosing a coffee table, it's important to consider your lifestyle and the functionality you need. Do you require storage? Prefer a certain material or design? All these considerations will help you find the perfect coffee table for your home.
