Yes, Norwex Microfiber is made in China. Initially, this concerned me as I was considering becoming a Norwex consultant. As someone who aims to think globally and act locally, I was worried about supporting a company potentially offering unfair wages or unsafe working conditions.
Norwex issues an annual global report, offering total transparency about its overseas factories. This intrigued me, and I wanted to learn more about the workers in China and how Norwex conducts its global business.
China boasts a high degree of expertise in textile engineering, even offering Ph.D. programs in the field. When Norwex's original plant in Sweden couldn’t keep up with demand, a new plant was established in China. This significantly increased the production of microfiber, from 1.5 to 2.9 million meters per cloth.
This is an important point to understand. Norwex does not outsource its production to poorly managed factories. By owning its factory, Norwex can oversee and control all operations, ensuring safety and quality. The company takes complete responsibility for everything that happens in the factory.
According to Norwex's 2011 global report:
Norwex is committed to fighting corruption and providing a safe, ethical working environment for its employees. The company adheres to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) standards relating to employee management, environmental sustainability, and human rights. Details about Norwex's compliance and status within the UNGC are available on their website.
The Norwex global report also includes interviews with several Chinese employees, many of whom relocated to work for Norwex with their spouses. The company has a Norwegian managing director in China to oversee practices and ensure adherence to UNGC’s 10 Foundational Principles. Additionally, the CEO, Debbie, visits occasionally to ensure employee satisfaction.
Reading these reports gives me peace of mind, knowing I’m supporting a company that values transparency and ethical operations. The next time you see the "Made in China" tag on a Norwex microfiber cloth, smile, knowing you are helping families worldwide enjoy a positive quality of life.
