Differences Between PVC & HDPE

PVC and HDPE exhibit distinct differences. Generally, HDPE is recognized as a flexible, robust, and impermeable plastic. PVC is also sturdy, but it lacks flexibility and is more susceptible to cracks and failures.

Both types of pipes are capable of withstanding typical water pressure fluctuations found in pipelines. Nevertheless, PVC can endure 100 psi above its pressure classification, while HDPE can handle twice that pressure. Moreover, PVC accommodates flow rates up to 5.5 feet per second before affecting its water pressure rating, whereas HDPE can manage up to 14 feet per second. Overall, HDPE demonstrates significantly higher resistance to cracking and failures resulting from water hammer and fatigue.

While PVC boasts a higher pressure classification for static water, HDPE excels in its working pressure rating. Additionally, during pipe system construction, HDPE's enhanced bend radius makes it an optimal choice for applications requiring curved or bent designs.

With HDPE, joining pieces does not require cement; instead, heat is used, resulting in minimal wait time. This advantage allows you to use your new pipes more rapidly, without waiting for cement to cure.
