Bucket teeth - ACMOC Bulletin Board

Hi, CJ.
It has always been my understanding that the hollowed faces should be on top as the hollows are there to help the flow of material into the bucket. They also help to keep the tooth sharp(er) by reducing the amount of metal in contact with the ground as you dig. The greatest wear on excavator and backhoe teeth is on the tip. By the time the material is moving up the front face of the tooth, it is already loosened and thus is not exerting the same wearing forces on the metal. Just why your tooth has managed to 'grow' a hole in the top face is a bit of a mystery to me. Maybe you got a dud. I don't think Cat have ever claimed that any of the products were completely bulletproof, just less 'not bulletproof' than other makes.

I have never bothered with reversing excavator teeth although I will swap worn corner teeth into the middle to help balance the wear. I have reveresed ripper boots to present a sharper edge and/or maximise the life of them.

Hi, EDB.
Thanks for the scan of the tool tips page. I can't honestly remember ever having come across a Cat tooth or ripper boot that did not fit both ways. How-wevver, with ripper boots it is usually fairly obvious which way they oughta be fitted. Having said that, I have also fitted some of them upside down to increase penetration angle on some machines or applications.
