A prism is a solid glass object given a specific geometric shape for the purpose of dispersing, deviating, rotating or displacing a beam of light. A micro prism, as the name suggests, is a very small version of an optical prism. Though there are many types of prisms, micro prisms are generally used to direct light in fiber optic communications, particularly in optical switches. Micro prisms provide an efficient way to change a beam of lights directory inside an assembly or fiber optic device. When light goes through one of the faces on the prism, its refracted. Depending on the design of the prism, the light may be propelled in various angles before exiting the prism. The main purpose of a micro prism in fiber optics is to direct beams of light from one optical channel to another with high precision. A micro prisms performance is closely related to its design and manufacturing. The eyepiece of an SLR is typically set at a certain diopter, that is, if it is not an adjustable diopter eyepiece. The cameras companies often do not publish this information but it seems that most fixed eyepieces were set at -1 (1 meter). So, if you can see clearly an object set at 40 inches from your eye you should have no problem with most older film SLRs.
Personally I prefer a plain matte focusing screen, no micro-prism or split wedge focusing aids. In cameras that allow interchangeable focusing screens, such as my OM-1 Ive always installed plain matte screen.
edit: If my dim memory serves, with a micro-prism focusing aid your eye needs to be centered in the viewfinder, not too far left-right or up-down. Otherwise, with a smaller aperture lens some part of the micro-prism will black out.
