PTC air heater, or Positive Temperature Coefficient air heater, is a type of electric heating element that uses a unique ceramic material which has a special characteristic of increasing its resistance as the temperature rises. This allows the PTC air heater to regulate its heat output according to the surrounding temperature.
One of the main advantages of PTC air heater is that it is energy-efficient, as it only draws the amount of power needed to maintain a steady temperature. This means that it can help reduce electricity bills and minimize energy waste. Additionally, PTC air heaters offer fast and even heating, ensuring quick heating response and maintaining a consistent temperature.
Moreover, PTC air heaters generate a low level of noise and are safe to use, as they do not produce an open flame or emit harmful gases. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications such as drying, curing, and heating of various materials and objects.
However, PTC air heaters also have some limitations. They are not suitable for high-temperature applications as they have a limited temperature output range. Also, their performance may be affected by variations in the surrounding environment such as humidity or airflow.
In summary, the PTC air heater is a reliable and cost-effective option for heating and drying applications. Its energy efficiency, fast and even heating, low noise, and safety make it an attractive choice for many users. Although limited in temperature range and affected by environmental factors, the PTC air heater remains a popular heating solution for numerous industrial and commercial applications.

Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heaters provide a reliable and efficient heating solution for a wide variety of industries.
Has your film heater ever stopped functioning when you needed it the most? Have you heard of car seats overheating or having hot spots? For decades, we have been relying on fixed resistance heaters for most of our needs. Safety remains an underlying concern when a single point sensor "assumes" the temperature of the entire heater. Despite the various issues that have plagued traditional heaters, we continue to deploy them widely across industries. However, Boyd has the answer to overcome all of these challenges - PTC heating - a technology that puts safety in the front seat.
What are PTC Heaters?
In this blog, we're kicking off a four-part series to answer your questions: the what, why, where, and how of PTC heaters.
Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heaters are self-regulating heaters that run open-loop without any external diagnostic controls. While traditional fixed-resistance heaters employ wires and coils to generate heat, PTC heaters use conductive inks printed on thin, flexible polymer-based substrates. Scoring high on reliability and efficiency, they are ideal for products that require safer, faster, and more uniform heating. The properties of the material allow the PTC heater to act as its own sensor, eliminating the need for any external feedback controls. As a result, the heater inherently eliminates the risk of overheating.
PTC heaters utilize Positive Temperature Coefficient materials, materials that exhibit a positive resistance change in response to the increase in temperature. As the temperature increases, the electrical resistance of the material also increases, thus limiting the current flow. The material allows current to pass when its cold and restricts current to flow as the threshold temperature increases.
PTC heaters draw full power initially to quickly heat up and reach the optimum temperature. As the heat increases, the power consumption simultaneously drops. This dynamic heating system is not only effective, but also time and energy efficient. PTC heaters can be designed to operate anywhere between -40°C and 70°C (-40°F and 158°F). The threshold temperature is customized during the design phase. Heaters with multiple temperature zones are achievable and watt density can be changed through simple modifications.
With a blend of performance and functionality, conductive inks redefining printed electronics, with components like PTC heaters. PTC heaters enable the freedom to design intricate heating patterns. They are also abrasion resistant, cost-effective, and allow large volume production. Carbon conductive inks are screen printed on polymer-based substrates to generate a Positive Temperature Coefficient Heater. While polyester is primarily used, other substrate materials can also be utilized. The PTC conductive inks can endure repeated cycles of heating and cooling. The printed circuits are sealed with an adhesive laminate to prevent the ingress of moisture as well as mechanical abrasion. Sealed constructions can withstand extreme external conditions and the rigors of heavy usage.
Ptc Heating Technology, a term synonymous with safety, utilizes best-in-class technology that surpasses the available options on the market today. In our next blog, we will elaborate on the benefits of PTC heaters versus traditional heaters.

Fin PTC Air heaters, in particular, offer a range of unique benefits. Because they are self-regulating, theres no risk of overheating, which allows for better conductivity, greater efficiency, and a longer life span while ensuring stable electronic response. Extremely versatile, these heaters are offered in various designs, including low air resistance models and high heating efficiency models; they can also be designed with either single or double insulation. Double insulation, in particular, allows for safe, efficient use underwater. Featuring fast thermal response time, low inrush current, and internal safety-fuse protection, as well as auto-cut-off to prevent abnormally high currents, Fin PTC Air Heaters are specifically designed for optimal safety. Available in a range of sizes based on customer needs, Fin PTC Air Heaters can be customized with outer frames, fuses, protective shields, and axial cooling fans.
Safe and energy-efficient Pelonis' specialty Honeycomb PTC heating disc is made from a revolutionary semiconductor ceramic material that has a very high Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC). The application of power on the PTC, resistance is initially decreased and temperature increased. The disc has over 1,200 holes that heat the majority of the airflow across the surface area of the disc. This generates a massive heat transfer in a small space which produces an instantaneous flow of heat up to 50% hotter than ceramic chip or conventional coil heaters.
The honeycomb disc is very safe and functions below the combustion point of paper. Honeycomb holder assemblies hold 3, 4, or 5 disc configurations producing up to watts of heat output. Choose among the various Pelonis ready assemblies or customize according to specific application needs.
Typically used in small applications, positive temperature coefficient (PTC) air heaters provide secure, effective heat transfer. PTC heaters make use of thermistors a type of resistor that depends on temperature to increase resistance as temperature rises.
Pelonis manufactures thermistors in three standard shapes round, rectangular, and square and can create custom sizes and configurations to fit unique application requirements or accommodate specific order quantities. These specialized thermistors are unique in that theyre used as self-regulating heating elements in our PTC air heaters.
Pelonis PTC air heaters are offered in two designs fin and honeycomb. Likewise, there are two kinds of PTC thermistors: silistors and switching-type. Silistors use silicon as their conductive material, and are known for their linear characteristics. These thermistors are typically are used as temperature sensors.
Switching-type PTC thermistors, on the other hand, are non-linear. When theyre heated, the resistance decreases until it reaches a certain temperature, then subsequently increases. Switching-type thermistors are widely used in PTC heaters, sensors, and other devices, especially as PTC self-regulating heaters.
Serving as safe, energy-efficient solutions for many different product designs, PTC heat conductors and natural convection heaters are available in a range of sizes and mounting options to allow for quick, easy installation.
These heaters offer high heating efficiency while ensuring optimal reliability. They also provide high heat retention and can easily maintain a constant temperature. Their silver-coated components ensure a long service life, better conductivity, and stable electronic response. PTC heat conductors and convection heaters are also insensitive to voltage fluctuation, and emit no smell or radiation.
PTC heat conductors and natural convection heaters are used in a wide range of applications, such as motherboards for computers and other electronic devices, steam irons, medical devices, beauty treatments, moisture control, frost protection, and medium- to low-heating products.

Review for 12v 150W heater plus fan combo
This unit has some P=IV (power). If you did not recognize the power formula, go research some AC/DC theory and wiring before using this.
Disclaimer/Info: I am not associated with any company listed and all items listed in my review, I purchased on my own. Use these items and information at your own risk and discretion.
Like I mentioned, the heater does have some power to it and ramps up the temp quite fast. In design these are full power/full temp all the time.
I found this out very quickly when I miscalculated my temperature controllers set point, placed the temperature sensor too far from the heater and did not allow proper airflow out from the heater.
The heater ramped up to well over 70C and melted a portion of my project. (Thats on me for sure)
As you can see in the pictures provided of my food dehydrator for drying out 3d printer filament, the plastic on the dehydrator, plastic fins on the heater and the black polycarbonate stand melted. There were slots for the hot air to escape but with the ABS spool holder having a solid base, there was not enough pass through to direct the hot air out. The abs spool holder did stand up fairly well to the high temps though. Version 2 (the hollow chimney stack photo) worked better and stood up to 60C (140F) but started to warp at 77C (170.6F). The lack of 1 star is for the melting of the plastic heater fins since the material used should be able to withstand the full temp that it is putting out. Especially on a device designed to be ran at full temp. (I ended up cutting off the plastic fins since the heater will be covered and away from wandering hands and objects)
Currently working on a version 3 with more spaces for air flow to escape and flow easier through my chamber.
With that said, a 110V power source is needed for the heater as well as a 12v power supply for the fan. I would highly recommend getting a Temperature controller and one rated for these voltages and wattage for the heater plus fan combo you choose. (Just dawned on me since it's not stated in the description, I'm not sure if both the fan and the heater require a DC power source or if they can be run on an Ac power source as well. Since I used an AC to DC power supply and temp controller from the beginning, but I assume they run on DC).
You will need some basic wiring knowledge to set this up but there are some good tutorials on youtube on how to wire these, but most devices will have either a wiring diagram on them or in a provided manual. A digital multimeter (DMM) is recommended to test your wiring for continuity, to test your devices functionality as well as to check/set voltages. It is recommended to test and set your output voltage on a variable power supply.

Power supply/transformer: Alitove DC 12V 20A 240W Power Supply Transformer switch AC110V/220V to DC 12v 20amp
I chose the larger wattage power supply so I knew it could handle more than what the heater could put out. Rule of thumb, size up 1.5 times the rating of the device/devices being used as well as safety/current protection to prevent failure.
Eventually, I will be doing a tutorial on my drier setup on my youtube channel as well as releasing the files for the printed parts. You can find me at Zeons Zone on both YT and IG for more information and project content.
