Code Requirements for Portable Generator

I have a situation where we have a large diesel generator unit that supplies 277/480 volt 3-phase to a 5 hp submersible pump. Does the NEC require a motor control panel with the recommended protection equipment or can you merely plug the unit directly into the circuit breaker panel of the generator? Is a disconnect means required other than the circuit breaker and the plug? In addition since this is a portable generator to a temporary submersible pump does the circuit from the generator to the submersible pump required to be in conduit since it is exposed to the elements, vehicle traffic, etc.?
